Under The Radar Premieres Izzy Heltai's Newest Single "Met On The Internet"

“Met on the Internet” reflects on Izzy’s early days dating as a trans teen, along with all of the emotional baggage and toxic behavior that came along with those early attempts at connection. Or as he puts it in the song’s closing lines, “When it’s the early 2010’s/And you’re just a lonely kid you kind of suck.” Izzy brings both a level of intimate honesty and rare charisma to the track, punctuating his stories of awkward teenage encounters with sweet sun-soaked melodies and unbridled emotion. The accompanying video also hits on a certain feeling of childhood nostalgia, tracking Izzy exploring winding suburban streets on his scooter.

Izzy explains of the song, “Being a trans-masc person, it’s easy to submit to the pressures of toxic masculinity, because society is telling us we will never be ‘man enough.’ As a trans teenage boy, I internalized a lot of unfortunate qualities considered masculine—emotional aloofness, entitlement, a general lack of communication skills—overcompensating for my lack of inherent ‘man-ness’—being born a girl and all. But it’s important for me to acknowledge my privilege within my marginalization. Even though I am part of an oppressed population, I still have the capacity to behave in problematic ways. So, to put it in fewer words: this song is my apology to anyone I tried to date in High School.”

Izzy Heltai Included In FAI's "Folk Pride: 6 Folk Songs About Queerness" Round Up

“His song “To Talk About Yourself” dives into his identity as a trans man. He beautifully writes about “the battle scars on your chest,” a well-crafted metaphor describing the battle of being transgender. But this lyric goes beyond physical scars and implies long lasting marks and the fight towards being seen as valid. Izzy has a new single coming out next month, “Met on the Internet,” which addresses these issues. He says, as a cis/straight passing man, “We have the capacity to act just as badly, or even worse, than cisgender men because society tells us we will never be man enough. This makes us feel even more pressured to inhabit (often toxic) ideals of masculinity.”

American Songwriter Names Izzy Heltai 10 LGBTQ+ Artists You Should Know

“Izzy Heltai first caught our attention with “Marching Song,” released in 2019. An earthy tone, the singer-songwriter has a way of cutting to the heart of the matter─particularly the shift that frequently occurs between childhood and adulthood. His debut LP, Father, reflects back wildly vivid moments of his life, like holding a mirror underneath the summer sun’s sharp rays.”

Consequence of Sound Writes About Izzy Heltai's New Single “Beauty Queen”

“That song is his latest single, “Beauty Queen”. Sparkling with longing and a summery beat, the track feels like it holds all the brightness of fresh romance. But this flirtation is more one-sided than the pretty music may imply, as Heltai sings, “She plays me like a tambourine/ And I don’t think she means/ To be that mean.”

FROM LUCKY BIRD MEDIA:

IZZY HELTAI PREMIERES

NEW SONG “DAY PLAN

AT TALKHOUSE

"At a time when a conversation can become a sociopolitical battle,

Heltai's introspective and thought-out songs are a breath of fresh air." — NPR

press photo by Emma Kate Rothenberg-Ware

Izzy Heltai has released the first new song since the release of his debut album Father last fall. Talkhouse premiered “Day Plan” today alongside an essay by the artist. It opens in relatable earnest:

The other day I tried to make conversation with the woman at the bakery down the street from where I live and realized I hadn’t spoken to another person in two days. I was just trying to be friendly but I think I overwhelmed her with my nonsensical barrage of questions. At this point in the pandemic, I’ve lost both my filter and my ability to small talk.

I guess I’m trying to say that most days have been blending together for me lately.

Looking around the (existential) room, Heltai’s meloncholic melody sways between half-hearted acceptance and outright apathy. He illuminates these identical days with a shimmering piano and mundane imagery, rattling with thoughts of god and square footage before bursting into listlessness: And I don’t like myself much / These days / I’m trying not to think ahead so much / And let these things play out but / My anxiety / Won’t let me sleep / Won’t let you leave.

Izzy Heltai released his debut album Father in the fall of 2020. Identifying as trans and queer, he embraced an emotionally vivid foray into his relationship to society, and to himself, acoss nine heartfelt songs. The debut drew acclaim from tastemakers like NPR, American Songwriter, The Wild Honey Pie, and Atwood Magazine among others. Heltai leans his introspective lyrics on an evocative looseness that lands between the camp kid indie of Pinegrove and the earthy twang of CAAMP, occasionally bending the edges of lines with a rawness reminiscent of Elliot Smith. Musically moving and lyrically direct, his songs tend to resonate like a conversation with a trusted friend.
